I only saw that silverbirch once, and wrote the poem some five or six years
afterwards, the shock of its swan-and-poppy-guarded survival in the heart of
Birmingham's industrial Victoriana still as vivid in my mind as the moment
of encounter. One day, I'll go there again to see if it still survives.
