Western Music and Racial Discourses, 1883-1933
11-12 October 2002
A conference hosted by the Music Department at Royal Holloway, University
of London
Call for Papers
The Music Department of Royal Holloway, University of London will host a
conference on 'Western Music and Racial Discourses, 1883-1933' on Friday
11 - Saturday 12 October 2002. It will be held at the Institute of
Romance Studies, Senate House, University of London.
The conference aims to examine the inevitable entanglements between racial
discourses and both conservative and progressive musical trends in the
years between Wagner's death and the rise of fascism in central Europe.
The focus on this period reflects our desire to interrogate these
discursive entanglements between their more explicit manifestation in
Wagner's racially inflected 'regeneration theories' at the one end, and in
the institutionalised cultural racism of Nazi Germany at the other.
Tracing connections between these two moments will be one fruitful area of
inquiry.
We would like to encourage issue-raising contributions engaging a range of
archival, historical, critical, and philosophical approaches to the topic,
and would be particularly interested in receiving proposals attempting to
engage the many difficult epistemological and ethical issues attaching to
the excavation of racial discourses. We are also especially interested in
contributions engaging with the topic in cultural contexts outside of
Germany and Austria, both elsewhere in Europe and in the New Worlds.
Conference committee:
Dr. Julie Brown (Royal Holloway, University of London)
Dr. Erik Levi (Royal Holloway, University of London)
Professor Peter Franklin (University of Oxford)
Professor John Deathridge (King's College London)
Deadline for proposals (title and abstract of 200-300 words): 31 December
2001.
Registration information, abstracts, programme and further announcements
will be made in Spring 2002.
