Many thanks to all who contribed re above.
The occurences which prompted it are from my 'electronic' version of
Colliery Year Book 1932, which I entered c.1989, so they may have got a
little mangled over the years. They are:
1) "Hedley Hope Coal Co, also seggar clay for tiles & firebricks."
2) "West Hunswick Silica & Firebrick Co Ltd (late West Witton Ganister &
Firebrick Co Ltd), also seggar."
These accord with contributions in as much as all relate to something with
good heat resistance but it would seem none of contributors has encountered
use of 'seggar' for the material rather than the artefact. Strange. It's
interesting that the above two organisations were in Tow Law (Co Dur) &
West Hallam (Derbys) respectively, so the term wasn't restricted to just
one locality.
At least I feel a bit better - if the combined might of the Mining History
List can't fully solve it, what chance had I?
Rgds,
Ken J. Smith.
