Dear Fiona
The ECDL is to be adopted as a standard in the NHS - see the NHSIA website,
for example the PID dated 31/8/01 is at
http://www.nhsia.nhs.uk/wowwi/pdf/ECDL_Implementation_PID.pdf At an NHSIA
presentation for the Eastern Region which I attended last week it was
explained that 'everyone' will be expected to complete four modules
(including the one on information and communication) under the auspices of
their employer, and then encouraged to complete the remaining three for
their own personal benefit. Some health authorities and trusts have already
started training their staff, in addition to the official NHS pilot sites,
but it was explained that the FREE training and resources cannot be offered
by NHSIA until next year. I guess that the best people to ask about this
will be local NHS IMT training staff, but it's very possible that they will
be suffering from incomplete information at present. It was made very clear
that we should not expect too much too soon. Since there has already been a
big build up in expectations some of our training colleagues were visibly
disappointed.
Best wishes
Lynette

Subject: European Computer Driving Licence
Has anyone tried this out personally or in their organisation? Was it
useful?
I've just heard about it and think it sounds promising as a basic level
qualification (the driving licence analogy is good), but others here are
decidedly disinterested in the idea. It requires no prior knowledge of IT
and computer skills and leads to an 'industry recognised qualification',
although at a non-expert level, of course.
Some summary blurb if you havent heard of it (website at
http://www.ecdl.co.uk/ )
'The European Computer Driving LicenceŽ (or ECDL) is the European-wide
qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in
computer skills. The ECDL consists of a seven module tests which lead to the
qualification including: basic IT concepts, using the computer and managing
files, WP, spreadsheets, database, presentation, and information and
communication. There are accredited test centres around the UK, and training
materials ' (I have my eye on an Irish manual covering all the modules at UK
pounds 27.50...).
