Hi, everyone,
Many thanks to all who responded to my query over photocopier charges.
Responses from 37 libraries summarised below:
A4 self sevice: varied from free to 10p per copy. Most common charge 5p.
Average 5.30p
A3 self sevice: varied from free to 20p per copy. Most common charge 10p.
Average 9.52p
A4 copied by staff: varied from free to £1.00(!). Most common charge 10p.
Average 10.77p
A3 copied by staff: the three libraries that quoted a rate for this all
listed 20p
Only one library quoted for colour copying, 60p per page.
Of those who answered the second question 21 libraries gave no differential
in charging and only 7 gave a discount for higher values.
Seven libraries specified that they had digital copiers and four specified
analogue.
Among the pertient comments from others:
Regarding higher charges for copying done by library staff 'You are
encouraged to charge for staff time under copyright law. It also discourages
readers from expecting you to do all their copying for them'.
Increasing charges 'Might lead to increase in unbound journal theft'
Cogent arguements were advanced for low, flat rates, which could actually
increased revenue, as more copying was done in the library and less was
taken to the nearest corner shop/newsagents.
One library was offering free work related copying and had found that the
cost of this was covered by the charges for personal use.
On the basis of this, I am seriously considering reducing rather than
increasing the charges, probably to 5p for A4 and 10p for A3, with double
these rates for copying carried out by my staff.
Yours aye,
