Saw Tony McSean's reply about situation at BMA library but just wanted to
say that I think the circumstances are a bit less clear-cut or civilised in
libraries with (horror of horrors) undergrads. The problem is where to
draw the line. At the moment in this library food and drink officially
banned. But the end of the day sees piles of rubbish associated with
"refreshments" anyway. We observe half eaten pizzas trodden into the
carpets, half empty coke cans upended and dribbling over the desks and
carpet - and often we can tell by smell rather than actually seeing it that
somewhere in some corner take-away hot food is being or has been consumed.
It is not just the books/journals/computers that might be damaged, it is
actually the whole fabric of the library - carpets, study desks, even the
ceilings as they seem to throw stuff about. We have decided we have the
reverse consideration to that posed by Jean - ie how to provide an area in
the library for use of journals/books/computers within what is seen by the
students as not so much a library but more as a meeting place/picnic area!
Don't even get me started on noise!
Shhhhh!
