A two day course on theory and practice in faceted classification schemes
Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th June 2001 at SLAIS, University College
London, 10am - 4.30pm
Organised by the Bliss Classification Association and the School of Library
Archive and Information Studies, University College London
Day 1: The nature of faceted classification; structure and design of faceted
classifications
Day 2: Using faceted classification. Practical classification and
implementation of BC2.
· Participants may attend Day 1 or Day 2, or both. Day 1 is intended for
those with a general interest in classification, those who are occupied with
the building of taxonomies, and BC2 users who may have limited knowledge of
the principles and theory of the system.
· Day 2 is primarily aimed at existing or potential BC2 users, or those who
wish to learn about fully developed faceted classification structures in
practice.
· Both days will involve formal presentations, and workshop sessions aimed
at learning practical skills.
· Numbers are limited to 20 per day. Fee 100 pounds per day (BCA members 50
pounds). The price includes tea, coffee and lunch

Day 1
Introduction
Session 1: Presentation: Background to faceted classification; problems of
compound subjects; enumerative & faceted classifications; faceted
classifications as knowledge structures
Uses and applications of faceted classifications; physical arrangement of
documents, files and documentary surrogates; faceted classifications as a
source of thesaurus terms, subject headings and descriptors.
Session 2: Presentation and workshop: Principles of faceted
classification; basic structures and the concept of categories. Collecting
and analysing vocabulary; working with categories and deconstructing compounds
Lunch
Session 3: Presentation and workshop: Order within categories; vocabulary
control and synonyms; order in array; more detailed arrangement, and
refinement of structure
Session 4: Presentation and workshop: Uses of the classificatory
structure; conversion to a thesaurus
Open session; questions and conclusions
Day 2
Introduction to the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition
Session 1: Presentation: The history and development of BC2; its role
as a
general scheme of classification and knowledge organizer. Theoretical
principles;
facet structure and citation order in BC2
Session 2: Presentation and workshop: Practical classification; document
analysis and subject summarisation
Session 3: Presentation and workshop: Basic classmark synthesis in BC2;
retroactive notation and the simple addition of concepts
Lunch
Session 4: Presentation and workshop: More complex synthesis; compounding
within an array, parallel subdivision, and the use of the intercalator
Session 5: Presentation and workshop: Using BC2 as a source of
descriptors, subject headings and thesaurus terms
Closing session: Questions and answers
