We have added those services authenticated via Athens to our WAM table.
Once their patron record has been verified by WAM what users get is
exactly the same whether they are on or off campus (for those hosts
which allow remote access). Even if they are using a computer in the
library they will be asked for their Athens username and password when
they try to access certain databases, so I don't think it causes any
confusion.
What is confusing is the fact they have to use three sets of username
and password: one to log onto the campus network (unless they are using
an OPAC PC in the library), one for self-service functions and patron
verification on INNOPAC and finally Athens. When there is a choice of
IP authentication or Athens, we have always chosen IP authentication
bypassing Athens as much as possible.
In one or two cases you have to use different URLs if you want to allow
your patrons to bypass WAM and use Athens instead.
