We have never recovered from Innopac's back-ups, although we
religiously back-up every week day. We have, however, recovered
from an operating system back-up and this worked fine.
Basically on the 1st of the month our server runs a complete back-
up of all of it's software, not just innopac. This is initiated from
within HP-UX which is our operating system.
On the occasion that I needed to recover, I was upgrading the
operating system and had made a HP-UX back-up before starting.
So this was the most current tape. If it had not been current, then
after the HP-UX recover, I would have had to apply the latest full
and subsequent daily Innopac back-ups.
I guess that your network manager would also do an operating
system back-up before any server maintenance. But it might be
worth considering scheduling regular operating system back-ups
because I'm not sure just how much is covered by the Innopac
ones. It is vague in their literature and when you look at the list of
files backed-up, it appears that the Innopac software is not
included. In other words Innopac backs up your databases but not
the software itself. (I may well be wrong about this, but just in
case...).
Obviously Innovative could easily rebuild your system from the
back-ups and their master software, but this would involve
someone working in the U.S. and may take an extra day, over what
could be achieved locally with an operating system one.
I'm looking forward to hearing other sites experiences.
