Hello
As many of you will be aware many electronic journals received through a
subscription require a user name and password. At the moment at Queen
Margaret University College library we store many of these passwords in an
access database and produce reports for library staff listing these
passwords on a regular basis. We also produce sheets of stickers with
passwords on them for students to take away. This inevitably causes problems
with storage and what to do when people telephone requesting passwords (ie
user access to passwords on and off campus).
At the moment when a library user utilises our library Webcat they must use
their own username and password when logging on to gain access to the
Electronic Links in catalogue records. When a person logs on as a visitor
the 856 field information in suppressed. As a result we thought it could be
a possibility that username and passwords could be entered in the library
catalogue record in the 856 fields and only users logging on with a valid
username and password would get access to this information.
Has any other institution tried this method. Or does anyone have any amazing
suggestions regarding storing passwords in a way that they can be readily
available to valid library users (staff and current students).
I would be grateful for any comments or information
Many thanks
Sharron Wilson
