BCS Electronic Publishing Group Seminar:
Content Management: opportunities, challenges and threats for
publishers
Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies,
Russell Square, London WC1
Tuesday 18 September 2001, 10.00 am to 5.00 pm
Content management is one of the current buzz phrases among
those
engaged in the technical aspects of publishing. But what does it
mean,
exactly? Is it about managing content in online environments, or is
it
about something broader? Is it like document management, or is it
altogether more complex and sophisticated? Is it relevant for book
production and, if so, what impacts will it have on publishing
workflows?
The truth is that Content Management can mean many different
things to
different people, and there is no agreed industry-wide definition.
Sometimes it is only about managing content on web sites; sometimes it
is a full digital asset management solution, providing end-to-end
solutions no matter what the inputs or outputs.
In order to unravel some of the misunderstandings and ambiguities
surrounding this new (but key) publishing issue, the organizers of
this meeting have gathered together a group of content experts, to
help you make up your own mind about the value of content management
and find out what it involves.
Among the issues to be discussed are:
- the different kinds of asset management and what they
offer;
- the potential impacts on publishing workflows;
- the impacts on editors, designers and publishing
managers;
- image management; file types;
- the business critical issues of structure, granularity,
aggregation and syndication in digital publishing.
Speakers will include (subject to final confirmation):
Berin Gowan of Abbey Information Systems, who will consider the
question of what content is and why this is widely misunderstood.
Michael Upshall, a markup language and information engineering
specialist, formerly Editorial Director of Helicon Publishing.
Maewin Cumming, from the Office of the e-Envoy at the Cabinet
Office,
where she is responsible for the Government Metadata Framework
and was
previously responsible for the government's Information Asset
Register.
Roberto Minio, of the aggregation and syndication specialists
KnowledgeView.
Mic Cady, who has been working on a report on content
management for
Pira (the publishing industries' research foundation).
Jeremy MacDonald of Macmillan, publishers of the Grove
Dictionary of
Music and the Macmillan Dictionary of Art.
