Communities on the Internet
Wednesday 14 February 2001,
Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, Russell
Square, London WC1
British Computer Society Electronic Publishing Specialist Group
Create an online service, and a community of users will establish
itself as a matter of course? It's not quite so easy! Yet a
community of users can be the magic ingredient that provides the
interactivity and relevance that makes a site an essential
bookmark.
However, establishing the importance of a web site is not the only
reason for having an Internet community. There are many others,
related to professional, academic, educational and commercial
needs.
This meeting will look at why and how communities have been
created on the Internet. It will include informed analysis from
organisations that have created successful communities, covering
the education, professional and academic spheres. The
presentations will also address the technology behind successful
community building.
This one-day seminar will be invaluable for anyone involved with or
contemplating setting up a community as part of their electronic
publishing programme.
Speakers
Speakers (subject to final confirmation) will include:
Iain Brown, Lecturer in Electronic Communication and Publishing
at University College London and one of the founders of the
'Electric Editors', who will describe the establishment of the
Electric Editors' community, based around its discussion lists and
web site .
Caroline Hook, Director for Oracle's Think.com initiative, an
educational community, in the UK. She will speak on How to
Think.com: supporting collaborative learning communities, covering
why Oracle believes in learning communities, its experience in
education, how the underlying technology works (or supports the
aim) and what such technologies can combine (and deliver).
Geoff Aldridge of the Open University will describe aspects of
communities at the OU.
Rizwan Mawani, of the Institute of Ismaili Studies, who will speak
on Community, Identity and the Internet: The Case of the Ismaili
Muslims.
Paul Mylrea, Editor of AlertNet, set up in 1997 by Reuters
Foundation, the charitable arm of Reuters. He will speak on When
mission-critical means saving lives: AlertNet - an award-winning
global community for disaster relief.
Leonie Ramondt of Ultralab will describe the activities of Ultralab,
probably the first organisation to develop educational online
communities.
Terry Waller of Becta will discuss The Educational Special Needs
Community on the Internet.
Mike West, Manager of the DfEE Online Community Project, will
talk about the project.
