> JUNE 2001 BRIEFING FROM THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING (ILT)
> * The ILT has reached a major milestone in the recruitment of its
> 5,000th member. By mid-May it had received over 5,500 applications for
> membership. It will therefore soon have overtaken its September 2001
> target of 5,280 accepted members.
> * Applications are drawn from the whole HE sector, with 39% of members
> coming from pre-1992 universities, 43% from post-1992 universities,13%
> from HE colleges and 5% from other types of institution (e.g. specialist
> colleges).
> * The ILT's recent Equal Opportunities Monitoring Survey of its
> membership shows that although 82% of respondents held an academic post, a
> growing number of academic support staff and those involved in the
> management of learning and teaching are also joining the organisation.
> Half the survey respondents were female and 94% classified their ethnicity
> as white. Comparisons of the survey results with comparable data from the
> Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reveal that ILT has a higher
> proportion of female academic staff than the sector as a whole but the
> same percentage classifying themselves as white. ILT members in the
> survey were also more likely to be in full-time posts (93% against 86%)
> and less likely to be under 35. The mean length of employment for ILT
> members on full-time contracts was nearly 14 years.
> * 83 programmes of staff development at 73 HE institutions have been
> accredited by the ILT to date. Over 30 more HEIs are seeking ILT
> accreditation within the coming year.
> * 81% of HE institutions now have plans for supporting ILT membership
> as a goal in their institutional Learning and Teaching Strategies.
> * The ILT's second Annual Conference, which will be held at the
> University of York from 4-6 July, has already attracted more than 300
> bookings and a waiting list for places is about to be opened. Over 100
> sessions have been scheduled and there will be special strands delivered
> by the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) and the newly
> established TechDis (Technology for Disabilities Information Service).
> * The ILT is encouraging members to set up local networks and
> specialist interest groups, following the success of its members' forums
> in Belfast and London in March and April. There will be an opportunity at
> the Conference for members to meet others in their area in 11 local
> groups.
> * The ILT is working on routes for entry to succeed the Individual
> Entry Route for Experienced Staff (the route to membership for those who
> have not completed an accredited programme), which is due to end in its
> present form in September 2001. It will be making a comprehensive
> statement about routes to membership after the Council meeting on 19 July
> 2001.
