Part-Time Teaching, Professional Development and the ILT - a conference
taking place at the NATFHE Conference Centre, Kings Cross, London on 20
September between 10.30am to 4.00pm.
Over the last year the academic unions have joined forces with the Higher
Education Staff Development Agency (HESDA), the Institute for Learning and
Teaching in Higher Education (ILT) and three HE institutions to ask
questions about part-time lecturers' and postgraduate tutors' attitudes to
their teaching, induction and professional development. This conference will
report on the project's findings and launch a process of consultation with
the sector. There will be information about a 'follow-on' project involving
HESDA and the Generic Centre of the Learning and Teaching Support Network
which will be aiming to gather information about good practice in the
sector. After hearing from those involved in the project, including the
perspectives of institutional managers, heads of department and subject
group, and part-time lecturers, delegates will be given the opportunity to
discuss in workshops the report's findings and recommendations and to
consider ways forward.
The conference will be of particular interest to: staff developers; staff in
teaching and learning units; personnel staff; others involved in developing
institutional teaching and learning and human resource strategies; academic
managers with departmental, subject group or course/programme level
responsibilities for part-time teachers and postgraduate tutors; and NATFHE
and AUT representatives.
Liz Allen, the Project Officer, may be contacted with enquiries about the
project ([log in to unmask], 020 7836 3636); or Michael Frearson at HESDA
([log in to unmask], 01223 462 539).
As well as being an interesting event to attend the topic should generate
debate and discussion on the list which could feed into the ongoing project.
The ILT is committed to developing services and processes which meet the
needs of all constituencies within UK higher education sector, and to
recognising the contributions individuals, including part-time colleagues,
make to higher education. We are therefore keen to foster debate on this
subject.
