> MARCH 2001 BRIEFING FROM THE INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING (ILT)
> This is the ILT's latest briefing, which we circulate monthly to the
> Funding Councils, the DfEE, Universities UK, SCOP and other stakeholder
> organisations. It may be freely circulated or published, and is also
> available on our website under http://www.ilt.ac.uk/news.html
>
> * Sir Kenneth Calman, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of the University of
> Durham and former Government Chief Medical Officer, was elected as the
> ILT's next Chair of Council at the Council meeting on 13 March. Sir
> Kenneth, who is a member of the ILT, takes up office immediately in
> succession to Professor Roger King, the ILT's first Chair.
> * The ILT has exceeded its membership target for March 2001 and is
> already well on the way to meeting its September 2001 target. As at 19
> March, it had received over 5000 applications, of which nearly 4500 have
> been accepted into membership. The ILT's recruitment targets are 3700
> members by the end of March 2001 and 5280 by the end of September.
> * At the end of February four Higher Education institutions numbered
> over 100 ILT members among their staff: the University of Leeds, the
> University of Paisley, Queen's University Belfast and the University of
> the West of England, Bristol. A further 16 institutions have over 50
> members. 39% of members come from pre-1992 universities, 43% from
> post-1992 universities and 14% from Higher Education colleges.
> * It has been agreed by the ILT Council that ILT members may use, with
> immediate effect, the postnominal designatory letters 'ILTM' (for Members)
> or 'ILTA' (for Associates).
> * The Higher Education Staff Development Agency (HESDA, formerly
> UCoSDA) - the National Training Organisation for the Higher Education
> sector - has signed a memorandum of co-operation with the ILT, stating
> that it recognises the ILT as the designated partner for the development
> of professional standards for teaching and the support of learning. This
> agreement recognises the ILT's special role in helping HESDA to fulfil its
> statutory responsibilities for ensuring the development of appropriate
> standards for the HE sector. HESDA and the ILT have worked
> collaboratively since the ILT's inception.
> * The ILT is setting up a working group to look at the development of
> the Initial Entry Route for Experienced Staff (the route to membership for
> those who have not completed an accredited programme), which is due to end
> in its present form in September 2001. The working group will seek advice
> from the HE sector and will give HE institutions and individuals ample
> notice of the arrangements that will apply from October 2001.
> * In order to gain a more complete picture of its membership and to
> improve its monitoring of equal opportunities in membership applications,
> the ILT has circulated an Equal Opportunities survey form to all its
> members. It has achieved an encouraging 40% rate of return. The returned
> forms are currently being analysed and the results will allow comparison
> of the membership data with available data on the HE sector as a whole.
> * The ILT has launched a pilot project on Continuing Professional
> Development (CPD) and is seeking expressions of interest from individual
> members, Higher Education institutions and professional associations who
> would like to participate in the project and help to shape the ILT's
> future policy and framework for CPD. Participating HEIs and professional
> associations will be asked to make a commitment to developing their own
> approaches to CPD during the period of the project, to help to develop
> practice and to share their experience with other participants.
