*Postdoctoral Fellow in Human Rights – Chicago, IL*
The Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago
invites applications for a one-year postdoctoral
fellowship to begin Autumn, 2001. The starting salary
is $34,000 plus University benefits. Applicants must
have received their doctorates before the Spring of
2001 but within the last five years; relevant
disciplines are political science, political economy,
economics, law, anthropology, history, and related
areas. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct three
courses (one graduate, one undergraduate, and one
grad/undergrad), pursue scholarly research and
coordinate the Human Rights Workshop. The Program
seeks scholars with an interdisciplinary approach and
experience.
Areas of interest are: 1. The relationship of
economic development and the environment to human
rights; 2. The evolution of human rights norms and
institutions with special reference to the
contemporary human rights regime, and 3. The
comparative or cross-cultural study of human rights
debates, policies or institutions.

The Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago
invites applications for the position of Director to
begin in summer 2001.
The Human Rights Program is an integral part of the
Center for International Studies and is governed by a
faculty board representing a wide variety of
departments, such as Anthropology, Biology, History,
Law, Medicine, Philosophy, Political Science, and
Social Service Administration. The Program is
committed to being a leading center for both the
academic study and the promotion of human rights. At
present, the Program's activities include the
following: maintaining a curriculum of courses in
human rights at both the graduate and undergraduate
levels, sponsoring internships with human rights
organizations for students and a fellowship program
that brings human rights activists to the University,
organizing conferences and workshops on such topics as
torture and international labor standards, and hosting
a network for placing persecuted scholars in American
universities.
The new Director will play a significant leadership
role in shaping the Program's future. Applicants must
have experience in human rights organizations and
advocacy. Administrative and grant writing skills are
necessary. The ability to do academic research and
teaching about human rights is also desirable. Salary
is dependent upon experience and qualifications.
