INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN FORCED MIGRATION
2 – 20 JULY 2001: REFUGEE STUDIES CENTRE, UNIVERSITY
OF OXFORD

** STOP PRESS! Travel and accommodation bursaries to
attend the Summer School available for EU citizens
under the age of 35 **

The Refugee Studies Centre at Queen Elizabeth House,
University of Oxford is offering a three-week
residential Summer School in Forced Migration from 2 –
20 July 2001.

The course is intended for those who wish to analyse,
understand and improve their practical knowledge of
forced migration.

Participants typically include:
 upper and middle managers of NGOs and IGOs
and faith based organisations involved in humanitarian
work
 government officials
 researchers involved with assistance and
policy making for forced migrants

Recent participants have come from, amongst other
organisations, the UNHCR, UNDP, JRS, PSF, MSF, JDC,
CERMOC, TCRS, IFRC, PARD, WFP, ECHO, IOM, NCCM and
UNRWA.  Participants have also come from Ministries of
Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs and Local Governments,
Departments of Social Welfare and Presidents’ and
Prime Ministers’ Offices and from universities and
research centres in countries such as Thailand,
Canada, USA, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Morocco, India, Japan,
Lebanon, UK, Jordan, Russia, Pakistan and South
Africa.

Through lectures, group work, simulations, case
studies, debates, discussion and individual study,
participants examine realities faced by refugees as
well as contemporary responses to displacement at
institutional and ground levels.

Over 15 working days, participants work through
modules addressing:
 the globalisation of forced migration
 legal-institutional and social developmental
models that describe forced migration
 asylum policy, international law and human
rights
 the development of programmes that address
the psychosocial needs of forced migrants
 co-ordination of relief efforts
 the challenges involved in negotiating
institutional responses to refugee crises
 the application of learning in practice

Skills in presentation making, report writing,
teamwork and organisational networking are also
developed.

Evening activities include films on refugee
experiences, seminars, participant presentations,
talks on Oxford history and social events.

The course is run by a full-time team from the RSC and
outside institutions. International guest speakers
contribute towards the airing of wide and varied
perspectives on all aspects of forced migration.

Venue: Wadham College, Oxford – one of Oxford’s
traditional colleges founded in 1612, situated in the
heart of the city on six acres of ground.
Participants are accommodated in single rooms, take
meals in the Dining Hall and have access to Wadham’s
large, quiet grounds and one of the most beautiful
gardens in Oxford.

Course fee: 2,250GBP - covers all tuition, course
materials, 20 days’ bed-and-breakfast accommodation in
Wadham College, weekday lunches and social activities.
 A certificate of completion is awarded at the end of
the course.

EC travel and accommodation bursaries are available
to:

1. Applicants under the age of 35 on 02/07/2001.

2. Nationals of the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece,
Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia,
Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands,
Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

In addition to fulfilling all of the above criteria,
applicants must be working or studying in fields
related to forced migration/development/humanitarian
assistance/human rights/internal displacement.

The funding, which will be awarded on a competitive
basis, will cover travel expenses in getting to the
summer school in Oxford by the most economical means.
It may also provide a contribution to the cost of bed
and breakfast accommodation in Wadham College, to a
maximum of £670.

Candidates for this funding will still need to cover a
portion (at least £1580) of the course fee.

Additional expenses participants would be expected to
cover include a subsistence allowance for evening and
weekend meals (£20 per day is advisable), an amount
for incidental expenses, and health insurance (if
applicable).

Candidates for the funding should apply by completing
the Summer School application form and returning this,
together with their curriculum vitae and personal
statement to the RSC.

In addition, applicants should request to be
considered for an EC travel bursary, and should
provide proof of age, nationality and work/study
physical address. Preference will be given to those
applications which demonstrate that at least £1580 of
the course fee can be met by the candidate
him/herself, from another source.

The closing date for receipt of applications for EC
travel bursaries is 15 March 2001.  Completed
