Hello again,

Given the interest this list has in thesauri for the heritage, I thought
members might be interested to see this from the NKOS (via UKOLN). They are
working on an XML DTD (a structured language for describing bits of a
thesaurus in a machine readable format) with the objective of making it
possible for thesauri to be exchanged and managed between different
providers. Clearly this has a practical application with the work of FISH on
the INSCRIPTION initiative. I am aware of at least one other project working
in this are - called ZThes - or perhaps they are the same thing under
another name(?).

Any thoughts?

Ed

Subject: NKOS meeting report (fwd)

I am forwarding a mail from Linda Hill which may be of interest to this
list. It gives news of a recent meeting of the Networked Knowledge
Organisation Systems (NKOS) group which is reported in the December issue
of D-Lib. This meeting considered a draft XML DTD for the mark-up of
KOSs (thesauri and controlled vocabularies in particular), and proposed
metadata structure for describing KOSs.

For anyone interested in looking at the proposed DTD I managed to find a
copy attached to an archived mail

http://orc.dev.oclc.org:5103/nkos/msg00164.html

Also a useful draft taxonomy of KOSs linked from the NKOS home page

D-Lib has published a brief report on the NKOS session that took place
in conjunction with the American Society for Information Science and
Technology Annual Meeting in Chicago on November 13, 2000. Focus of the
meeting was on a draft XML DTD for marking up a KOS, developed by Joseph
Busch and Ron Daniel of Metacode, Inc. Thanks to Gail Hodge for
organizing the session and writing the report for D-Lib. A link to the
report has been added to the NKOS homepage:

Happy Holidays!
