Hello all,
One of the terminology standard included in the INSCRIPTION terminology
framework is the RCHME Archaeological Periods List, used within the English
NMR and fairly widely adopted in the discipline.
For a long time it has been recognised that the lists coverage of recent
periods is very weak. Recent initiatives at English Heritage (Images of
England, PastScape and recent NOF funded access projects) have suggested the
need for more specific terms within the POST MEDIEVAL and MODERN periods. In
response, the Data Services Unit have now added the following narrow terms
to these two periods, and I am passing them on for information. The letters
in brackets are short versions of the term:-
POST MEDIEVAL
TUDOR (TUD)
ELIZABETHAN (LIZ)
STUART (STU)
JACOBEAN (JAC)
HANOVERIAN (HAN)
VICTORIAN (VIC)
MODERN
EARLY 20TH CENTURY (E20) - up to 1945
LATER 20TH CENTURY (L20)
This extension of the old list is recognised to be something of a stop-gap,
pending future development of the 'Timelines' thesaurus to cover
chronological terminology. A project to take Timelines forward is in
planning stages.
