Dear All,
just a quick correction on what English Heritage are supplying as part of the MAGIC website. Brian is correct in saying that we are supplying WHS, Battlefields, Parks & Gardens as polygons to MAGIC, however the Scheduled Monument data is only available as points. There are a number of issues with the Scheduled Monument polyogn data which needs to be resolved before it could be released as a layer on the MAGIC web site. Hope this clarifies the situation.

Dear All
A comment on MAGIC - details as supplied by James are fine and information
is available on the MAGIC web site. To provide an update on current process
.
EH is a contributor to MAGIC in fact we are responsible for one of the topic
themes within the system, namely the historic environment, there are others
such as transport, lifescapes, access, forestry etc. who are the responsibly
of the other partners.
For the heritage layer we have supplied data as polygons for scheduled
sites, WHS, battlefields and parks and gardens.
We are currently looking at the supply of NewHIS data as points and
polygons.
Listed buildings are something I hope will follow but a large amount of work
on geo referencing will be required.
At present a working prototype is being tested by selected staff at the
participating organisations - early indications are that this has been a
success.
I hope this helps, please contact me if further information is required.
Cheers

Subject: Re: SAMs on GIS
I don't know whether I have missed some messages as our mail server has been
down over the last few days, and this may already have been raised.
I understand that DEFRA, working with partners (DTLR, English Heritage,
English Nature, Countryside Agency, Forestry Commission etc) are working on
a project called MAGIC (Multi-Agency Geographic Information for the
Countryside) to do (among other things) just this job for England. Quite
what their data standards are I couldn't say, and it may be that SAMs are
being represented only as points at the moment.
A wide variety of datasets of designated sites and areas are covered,
including natural environment, landscape characterisation, agri-environment
etc, but also historic environment designations - battlefields, designated
wrecks and SAMs. Listed buildings are not mentioned but presumably the
intention is to include these at a later date. The project is due to go
online in Spring 2002.
Further information on this project is available on their website
(www.magic.gov.uk). Full data will be shared between the partners and
summary data will be available on the web via the Countryside information
system (www.cis-web.org.uk). My 2-minute reading of their extensive online
manual suggest that they only present data by km square.
Perhaps others on the list can throw more light on this project.

Subject: SAMs on GIS
Dear All,
Regarding Jason's note near the end of his presentation, I like to ask what
resources are English Heritage putting into a web accessible, down-loadable,
GIS inter-operable database for SAM boundaries and descriptions ??
Cheers,
Neil
