Rebecca Jones reported that STAG was established in 2000 with representation
from ADS, EH DSU, SCRAN (Scottish Cultural Resource Access Network) ARIA
(the Association of Regional and Island Archaeologists, a Scottish
equivalent to ALGAO), HILT to produce a monument types thesaurus for
Scotland. Previous online systems (CANMORE -
http://www.rcahms.gov.uk/canmoreintro.html ) had relied on uncontrolled
vocabulary fields. DSU have mapped the existing terminology to their
Thesaurus of Monument Types to produce a clean list as a starting point for
adding Scotland specific terminology and meaning. This work was completed in
March 2001. Currently working on hierarchies and scope noting, with plans to
include images and connection to type sites in the Scottish NMR. The
thesaurus will need to retrospectively index some 184,000 NMR records.
Organisation change to RCAHMS is pending. It is planned that in the future
the NMRS will include provision for a full time Information Standards Group.
