From my position as manager of archaeological archives and knowing very little of the detail of GIS, I would like to add my plea to those of Niel Campling's and Tim Grubb's for GIS standards. GIS is just one of the specialist components of archaeological archives and archive staff can't hope to be hope to be expert in all of the deposited data. Where there are nationally agreed Standards we can stipulate and insist on compliance, otherwise we don't know what we're getting and are none the wiser when we do!
