though largely in agreement with "holden," i need to
point out that i had seen THE BIRDS many times before
it ever occurred to me that there was anything even
remotely disturbing about that shot . . . it was simply--
i thought in my innocence--a convenient way of
communicating the story information
it was only when i started the formal study of cinema
that i learned that i had always been disturbed by
that shot without ever even knowing it . . . how dumb
can you get???
i mention this only because it seems to me a representative
moment of the discipline of cinema studies . . .
maybe holden is nailing more than just zizek when he
refers to critics "who specialize in making shit up" but whom
we nevertheless find it fascinating to read -- more fascinating
[this is the scary part] than the films they are ostensibly
talking about
