Another suggestion might be Matewan by John Sayles.
For years this was my favourite film. It might still
be if i'd given up thinking in terms of favourites and
stuff.
What about pro-capitalist films? I felt that American
Beauty (mentioned in the original post) was a pro
capitalist film. His rebellion is typified by him
buying a car and getting a job in MacDonalds (or
something of the sort). Also the Full Monty and Billy
Elliot seem to me to pretend to be leftish films in
the mode of Kes or Ken Loach generally, but really
give out messages of thatcherite individualism and
despair.
Falling Down, as well. And You've Got Mail.
