The laziness and knee jerk presumption of some of this
discussion is truly shocking. I don't know something
but I'm a hundred percent sure of an opinion which
depends on me knowing that thing which I've already
said I don't know. The Jewish Community was appalled
at Life is Beautiful (all of it--part of it--was there
any disagreement). The extremes of moral indignation
that get launched at these films sounds to me far more
like the slamming of doors and the shutting of mouths
rather than the taking part in a discussion. Although
flawed I thought that Life is beautiful was dealing
with a subject in a very Italian way. It reminded me
of Primo Levi's attempts to find moment s of humanity
in the midst of the horror. Levi also has an interest
in the form of fable which the film self-consciously
placed itself in. Why is realism questioned as just
another falsifying narrative form except when it comes
to something like the holocaust? I know the answer is
because the relationship between what we show and what
happened seems far more vital. But I would defend La
Vite e Bella as an alternative approach and a valid
one, just as valid and just as insufficent as meryl
streep dieting before filming sophie's choice.
best wishes
