"Woody Allen constructs his films to appeal to a very SMALL, SPECIFIC
audience, who he sees as already having the "cultural knowledge" to
understand what is happening within the film."
oh yeah, there's also this jackass know it all waiting in line for a film
who is shown his own folly when misinterpreting m mcluhan.
you needn't have read _The Medium is the Message_ to get the joke.
who gives a damn if woody allen intends a small, specific audience?
what difference does allen's intent make if it is only for a few?
why does he release his films if they're only accessible to a very few?
directors are always sticking little tidbits into films such as the example
you give from annie hall...those little in-jokes are asides, not THE
CULTURAL CONTEXT of the film...it's special when you get an aside, when you
know you've shared an actual experience with a director...if you lived in
neighborhood there or knew a name dropped or lived through an event
represented...but it's not necessarily essential...
you need not understand the obscure references in a film to understand the
film itself.
