You're right to mention that pornography raises issues of indexicality (the
snuff film is a similar example), but as for how to categorize it, I think
it unquestionably deserves to be placed into its own "box," since as an
institution it has been autonomous and rather drastically separate from
other modes of film production. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "no
faking," since as you mention porn works with a combination of realism and
artifice.
