RE the above one thinks also of Gus Van Sant's _My Own
Private Idaho_, where the cliches of cinematic sex are
sidestepped via a series of tableau vivants featuring
Keanu Reaves and Chiara Caselli's characters. Perhaps
the theme of immobility could also feed into River
Phoenix's character's narcolepsy, a physical
immobility of the body which in the film is often
contiguous with the symbolic open road, a symbol of
space and travel via movement.
