Environmental Policy and the Costs of Compliance
Workshop to be held on September 17th and 18th
London School of Economics, UK
Concerns about the costs and benefits of environmental policy exert a
defining influence on the policy process at every level. But evidence on the
costs of compliance is often hotly contested. Claims are often challenged as
different actors favour different methodologies and place varying emphasis
on the macro and the micro, the public and the private, the short term and
the long term, the certain and the risky, the economic and the environmental
and so on.
This workshop will seek to understand the significance of these issues by
examining the perspectives and experiences of the range of different groups
with an interest in this issue, the various methodologies that can be
applied to assess the costs of compliance and the influence that different
assessments have had on the policy process. Presentations will consider
issues relating to the costs of compliance from a range of perspectives.
Day 1 of the conference will focus on practitioner experiences while
presentations on Day 2 will outline the results of a range of research
projects which have examined issues relating to these questions from a range
of perspectives and in different policy areas/settings.
