About The Research Centre of Environmental and Health Education
The Research Centre is based at the Danish University of Education,
which has the task to carry out postgraduate, masters and Ph.D.
programmes within the field of education and psychology. Besides that
research is carried out in areas related to education, pedagogy and
psychology.

The research centre consists of 16 academics coming from a number of
different areas such as Philosophy, Curriculum Studies, Biology,
Domestic Science, Social Science, Pedagogy and Geography. The research
approaches varies between action research, empirical (quantitative as
well as qualitative) research and research in development of concepts
and theories within an action-oriented environmental and health
education.

Over the years, so-called research-based development work has assumed
increasing importance, and the research centre often co-operates with
local education authorities and with individual teachers on projects of
this kind.

The research-based developmental work, which is an action research
approach, has been in focus in many of the research projects carried out
by the research centre. Within this framework it has been the aim to
develop, "test" and evaluate new strategies within environmental and
health education. An important part has been to identify current
tendencies, barriers and possibilities within the field of Environmental
and Health Education. The crucial element within this research paradigm
has been the dialogue between researchers and schools, mainly
represented by teachers. Three projects carried out recently are
examples of this research approach:

1. Children as catalyst of environmental change
A research project running for three years. The partners were
researchers, staff and pupils at three schools and the technical
department at the municipality. The tasks were to explore barriers,
conditions and possibilities for developing an action-oriented
environmental education with a two-fold aim: 1) to initiate actions and
changes within the field of environment within the community and 2) to
support pupils in acquiring the abilities to take action for improving
the environment. The main outcome of the project is the identification
of a number of conditions that have to be in place if environmental
education and schools should meet the demands of the school (pupils
action competence) and the community (environmental changes) at the same
time.

2. MUVIN (Environmental Education within the Nordic countries)
The MUVIN project is a combination of teacher training, experimental
teaching, action research and educational research, all related to
Environmental Education with the aim of enhancing pupils' action
competence. Nearly 100 schools and more than 300 teachers have
participated, within the period 1994-97. Each class had the challenge to
work with conflicting interests related to (local) environmental issues.
The "democracy in the class room" aspects have been much in focus for
all related activities and many different approaches have been tested.
From the basis of this project the "New Generation of Environmental
Education" has been developed.

3. Danish Network of Health Promoting Schools
During the past 5 years the Danish network has been part of the European
Network of Health Promoting Schools. The overall aim of the Danish
network has been to develop a notion of a health promoting school that
is in harmony with Danish cultural and pedagogical traditions of
"Education for and with democracy". All schools have - in collaboration
with the researchers connected - been working with three issues: 1)
exploring new and innovative strategies for developing pupils' action
competence within the health area, 2) developing strategies for schools
collaboration with the local community on an action-oriented health
education and 3) integrating an international dimension. One of the
outcomes has been the identification of two competing paradigms: A
Moralistic and a Democratic health education.
