Subject: Information on new 'green' school travel material sought

Cleary Hughes Associates have been commissioned by the DETR to keep up
to
date the database of 'green' school travel classroom resources that they
prepared last year and which was launched in October 2000. The
attachment is
a press release giving further information and asking for information on
any
new materials. The attachment is in the form of a Word 98 document; if
you
would prefer another format (including Apple/Claris formats for the Mac)
please let us know.

For immediate release

DETR database of 'green' school travel
learning materials now being updated

Changing the pattern of school travel away from dependence on the car is
now firmly established as a priority. Many schools already have green
travel plans and more are preparing them. Measures to make schools and
their surrounds more attractive to children walking, cycling and using
public transport to get to school are widespread. To support these, the
concept of sustainable travel has been brought into the curriculum in a
wide range of subjects from geography, science and mathematics to art
and even drama.

Last year the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions
commissioned specialist sustainable travel consultants Cleary Hughes
Associates to set up a database of classroom material relating to
sustainable travel, as a resource for teachers. The first 'edition' of
the database was launched in October 2000 and can be accessed via the
DETR's web sites www.databases.detr.gov.uk/schools/ or
www:local-transport.detr.gov.uk/
schooltravel/index.htm. Teachers and parents can search the database for
information about learning resources on issues relevant to sustainable
travel. Searches can be tailored to look for resources applicable to
different teaching subjects, to different key stages or on different
topics, such as walking, cycling and public transport.

The DETR has asked Cleary Hughes Associates to carry out a series of
six-monthly updates of the database entries: the first of these is now
due.

Cleary Hughes Associates would therefore like to hear from anyone
producing, using or aware of relevant possible classroom material.
Suitable material may well not have been designed specifically for
classroom work: the criterion for inclusion is its relevance to
sustainable travel. Cleary Hughes Associates would also like to hear
from producers of material already on the database who have revised or
updated its content, or who expect to do so shortly. The contact is Jo

Notes for editors
Cleary Hughes Associates, based in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, are
specialists in planning for cycling and walking as a means of travel and
have developed something of a specialisation in school travel, examining
it from the perspectives both of children's road safety and the
environmental and health impacts of a growth in reliance on private cars
for these journeys. They are now one of the leading UK specialist
consultants in sustainable school journey initiatives. In addition to
developing school and other green travel plans, the partnership has
produced a number of papers and reports based on extensive work with
authorities such as Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County
Council, the latter including the preparation of Key Stage 2 and 3
classroom materials.
