Human Frailty: Rights, Ethics and the Search for Global Justice
6-7 September 2001

The conference is convened by the Centre for Critical Theory at the
University of the West of England and the Faculty of Social and
Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge.  The conference is
sponsored by the International Interdisciplinary Journal, "Human Rights
Review" which will publish selected papers of the proceedings, and
supported by Jurys Hotel, Bristol.

Plenary Speakers:
Zygmunt Bauman is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the Universities of
Leeds and Warsaw. His books include Modernity and the Holocaust (1989),
Postmodern Ethics (1993), Postmodernity and Its Discontents (1997),
Globalization (1998) and Liquid Modernity (2000).

Jacqueline Rose is Professor of English at Queen Mary and Westfield
College, University of London. Her books include Sexuality in the Field
of Vision (1985), Why War? (1993), and States of Fantasy (1996).

Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Professor of Anthropology at the University of
California, Berkeley. Her books include Saints, Scholars and
Schizophrenics: Mental Illness in Rural Ireland (1983), Death Without
Weeping: The Violence of Everyday Life in Brazil (1993), and her
forthcoming book is Undoing: Violence and Democracy in the New South
Africa.

Panel Topics:
        Sociology, Social Theory and Human Rights
        Politics, Political Theory and Violence
        Philosophy, Ethics and Justice
        Feminism, Psychoanalysis, Subjectivity

Venue.  The conference is being held at Jurys Bristol Hotel, Prince
Street, Bristol, BS1 4QF.  A prime city centre location readily
accessible by car, train or plane.

Parking.  Delegates will be able to park (free of charge) in the car
park next door to Jury's Hotel.

Accommodation.  A number of rooms have been allocated at a reduced rate
for conference delegates at Jurys Hotel.  Thursday 6th @ 95.00 bed and
breakfast.  Friday 7th @ 60.00 bed and breakfast.  Please note that
numbers of rooms are limited - early booking is therefore advisable.
Delegates should make their own reservations by ringing the Hotel and
quoting 'Human Frailty' on +44 (0) 117 923 0333, Fax: +44 (0) 117 923
0300.  A list of alternative accommodation is enclosed.

 Call for Papers

Papers are invited from all interested parties.  Delegates are asked to
submit an abstract of 200 words, to nominate the panel topic in which
they would prefer to present their paper and provide three keywords
relating to the theme of the paper to facilitate allocation in the
appropriate panel.

The format for submission of abstracts and papers is Microsoft Word 97.
The file may be submitted either by email or on disk.  Facsimile
transmission of papers and abstracts will not be accepted.

Abstracts for consideration must be received by Monday 30th April 2001.
The paper should be no longer than 3000 words in length.

Cost:  (until 15/3/01) 170, thereafter 190 - 120 concessionary rate, 95
day delegate rate.

Cancellation Policy: Requests for cancellation must be in writing.
Cancellations received before July 31 2001 will be refunded less 20% of
total amount paid.  Up to August 23 2001, 50% of the total amount paid
will be refunded.  No refunds will be made after August 23rd 2001.
