PhD Studentship in Political Theory

The Department of Politics/Graduate School of European and International
Studies at the University of Reading is offering a PhD Studentship in
Political Theory. The successful candidate will be supervised by and
work with Professor Bellamy and his colleagues within the Political
Theory sector, whose research is described below. The successful
candidate will be expected to undertake up to 4 hours a week of first
and second year theory seminars.
Stipend
The Studentship consists of full fees at the EU rate (currently worth
2740), and a stipend of 6800.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant
discipline, such as Politics, Philosophy, Law or Sociology, and
normally be taking or have already completed an MA Course in some area
of Political, Social or Legal Theory or Ethics.
Political Theory Research at Reading
There are currently six political theorists on the staff at Reading.
There is also a thriving MA programme in Political Theory and Public
Ethics and some 5 other doctoral students currently working in this
area. The Department and School are recognised as a Mode A Research
Training outlet by the ESRC.
Current staff and their interests include:
Professor R P BELLAMY; MA, PhD (Cambridge); Established Chair of
Politics and International Relations, Head of the Department of Politics
and Acting Director of the Graduate School. Interests include European
(particularly Italian) social and political theory post 1750,
contemporary analytical Anglo-American political philosophy, and
constitutionalism and citizenship in Europe. He is currently involved
in three major ESRC funded research projects on European
constitutionalism, political culture and civil society and directing a
Leverhulme Project and a TSER Network on European Citizenship. Recent
publications include: Liberalism and Pluralism: Towards a Politics of
Compromise , Routledge, 1999; Rethinking Liberalism, Pinter, 2000 and,
as co-editor , Constitutionalism in Transformation: European and
Theoretical Perspectives, Blackwell, 1996 ; Pluralism and Liberal
Neutrality, Cass, 1999 and Citizenship and Governance in the EU
(Continuum, forthcoming). He is currently a Jean Monnet Fellow at the
European University Institute in Florence whilst co-editing the
Cambridge History of Twentieth Century Political Thought and writing
books on Constitutionalism, Citizenship and the Social Thought of
Benedetto Croce.
Mr A J COATES; BA (Newcastle), MSc (London); Lecturer in Politics,
with a particular interest in the ethical dimensions of international
relations and international conflict. Recent publications include: The
New World Order and the Ethics of War, Holden, B B (ed) The Ethical
Dimension of Global Change, Macmillan, 1996; The Ethics of War,
Manchester University Press, 1997 and International Justice (ed)
Avebury, 2000. He is currently writing a study of virtue ethics and war.
Dr A CROMARTIE; MA, PhD (Cantab); Lecturer in Politics, with a special
interest in the history of political thought. The author of a study of
Hale for CUP, his recent publications include `Harringtonian Virtue:
Harrington, Machiavelli and the Method of the Moment', Historical
Journal (1998) and `The Constitutionalist Revolution: The
Transformation of Political Culture in Early Modern England', Past and
Present (1999). His study of constitutionalism and political thought in
seventeenth century England is forthcoming from CUP.
Mr B B HOLDEN; BA (Keele); Senior Lecturer in Politics, with a
particular interest in democratic theory and the ethical implications of
global environmental change. Recent publications include: The Ethical
Dimensions of Global Change (ed), Macmillan, 1996 and Global Democracy:
A Debate (ed), Routledge, forthcoming. He is currently completing a
study of Global Warming and Democratic Theory for Continuum.
Dr J LESTER; BSc (Bradford), PhD (Hull); Lecturer in Politics,
Director of the BA in European Studies, and specialist in continental
political thought and social movements in the former Soviet Union.
Recent publications include: `Remembrance of Things Past ... The 1905
Soviets and Their Contemporary Implications', Contemporary Politics 2
(1996); `Overdosing on Nationalism: Gennadii Zyuganov and the Communist
Party of the Russian Federation', New Left Review (1997). His most
recent book is Dialectics of Negation, Pluto Press, 2000 and currently
writing a study of Ernst Bloch.
Mr. A WILLIAMS, BA (Oxford); Lecturer in Politics, specialises in
Anglo-American political philosophy, particularly issues of equality and
justice. Recent articles include: "Resource Egalitarianism and the
Limits to Basic Income", Economics and Philosophy (April, 1999), and
"Incentives, Inequality, and Publicity", in Philosophy and Public
Affairs 27 (Summer, 1998). He is co-editor of The Ideal of Equality
Palgrave, 2000 and is currently a Fellow in Ethics and the Professions,
Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, working on a study of
Intergenerational Justice for CUP.
Recent and Current PhDs in this area include:
$Julie Wymer (just completed), a study of womens moral reasoning
$Ciaran O'Kelly, a study of legitimacy and nationality, with special
reference to Ireland.
@Emmanuella Lombardo, a study of feminist theory and gender policy in
the EU
*Shivdeep Grewal, a study of the application of Habermass theory of law
to the EU
*Jorge del Rio Fernandez, a study of G D H Cole and Antonio Gramsci
*Dirk Haubrich, International Justice and Globalisation
