Subject: Digitising Beta Sx tapes
To: [log in to unmask]
As Broadcast Archive Librarian at the Welsh Assembly, I will be arranging
the digitisation of our growing archive of Plenary Session and Committee
recordings. The archive is currently about 500 hours (on Beta SX) and
grows by about ten hours a week.
Has anyone implemented a digitisation project on a similar scale?
Thank you/Diolch

Subject: Archiving e-mail and other electronic files

We are currently looking into the way in which we are going to deal with
the subject of archiving those e-mails and other electronic files (WP,
databases, images, etc) which are of long-term or permanent corporate
value. As an NGO in the voluntary sector we need to look at very
cost-effective systems. We already have well-developed systems for dealing
with physical files from current use through to disposal or archiving and
also with the electronic archiving of our official documents. Our
challenge is, as more and more day-to-day decisions and communications are
made without recourse to paper, how do we implement systems which will
enable us to keep those files we need to keep whilst not clogging up our
system with the 70% or so of files which we don't need.
I would be interested from any member of this list who has had to face up
to this problem, which I see falling into two parts:
1. How to deal with material from now backwards which has not been
subjected to any kind of classification
2. How to implement the kind of practice we need to enable proper
management of records and files from current use through to archiving in
the future
Regards
Chris Catton
