Sorry, I know this sounds a bit like a lecture but although the issue ofSPSS files hasn't come about at Hull I always recommend that people do *not*
set browsers to open files automatically. As far as students (and many
staff) are concerned they are simply accessing a web site when using
Blackboard and if we encourage them to automatically open files then they
get into the habit of doing this when they surf the web in general, which
opens them up to the usual risk of viruses. Therefore I always recommend
encouraging the (albeit tedious) habit of downloading and checking files
before opening.
regards
Paul

Good point here from Richard, upon reflection, we did fiddle to allow the
files to be distributed via Blackboard, but you need to save the file and
then open it (obviously on a machine with SPSS) rather than opening directly
in a browser

I do not know blackboard, but in webct you can distribute any file type so
long as the mime type for the file is on the web server. You could get your
systems guys to look at this and try adding the mime type to the server
config file.

We had to post the data files via the departmental space on the central
server. Not ideal as only available on campus, but then students don't tend
to have SPSS on machines at home, so only really used the campus machines
anyway...

Hi all,
SPSS v.10 is used a lot on our Psychology courses to provide
students with data sets for analysis. Bb does not currently support SPSS so
lecturers are having to distribute the files on disk.
Has anyone else had any experience with SPSS v.10 or managed
to make it talk to Blackboard,
best wishes,
Steve
