At the University of Sheffield we are beginning a project to redesign the part
of our central student system which handles assessment processing (ie
loading/recording examination results, etc).
One of our key concerns is to incorporate efficient links with data sources
held in academic departments. Our current procedures involve electronic
transfer of results files from departments and automatic 'uploading' of the
data into the central record and we are keen to build on this methodology
and to enhance it in the future.
I would be very grateful to hear from any colleagues who have introduced
business processes in this area which have further streamlined the links
with academic departments and markers (eg do you have arrangements
which allow direct input of results at academic department level; or are
there procedures involving centrally provided forms/spreadsheets which are
updated by departments, perhaps using the web?)
Overall, our aim is both to remove the need for double-entry and to enhance
the service we provide to departments and I would be very pleased to hear
direct from anyone who would be willing to share any relevant experience.
