Laboratories are generally fully staffed for only 9 hours out of 24 hours for 5, 6 or 7 days per week - in constrast to this patients are ill 24 hours per day 7 days week (7 by 24). Therefore the norm is for the laboratory to function with minimal staff for most of the time and we should have the ability to communiicate results when required and not when it is convenient to us.
We use the Delphic Medical Systems (www.delphic.co.nz) LIS and report results by HL7 to Eclair on the Web. All transactions are reported from the LIS to Eclair within 1 minute.
When a sample is registered into the LIS this is reported as "result to follow" for each of the tests requested. When a result is entered it is either sent as a final authorised result or as an unauthorised result for later authorisation (validation). At present all results from interfaced equipment are released by the analyser operator into the LIS and immediatley reported into Eclair.
Manuall results are initially reported unauthorised and are checked along with the worksheets from the interfaced equipment during the day shift.
"We tortured the data until it confessed."
