I seem to remember that Hermes after killing the serpents (at the age of
two, and with his bare hands!) sent to kill him by Hera, is supposed to
have made a lyre from two goat horns and a tortoise, and strung the thing
with cat gut. Although I may be wrong, and it could have been Heracles
(more in keeping with Hera's pathological dislike of Heracles!)
