RE: "DISCUSS WHAT YOU FIND DISTINCTIVE & INTERESTING IN THE TREATMENT OF
MASCULINITY IN 1980'S/90'S FILMS FROM THE CINEMA OF EASTERN ASIA".
Sorry this reply is so late, but you might like to look at Miike Takashi's
'Audition'. It's a brilliant contemplation on masculinity and the role of
Man in modern day asian society (in particular Japan). His fears, his
anxieties. Very good film and extremely though provoking.
Any way thought it might be a nice place to start. Then of course you'll
have to watch all the films by Ringo Lam and John Woo.
Plus look at 'wu-xia' films and the traditional Chinese Ghost Stories. The
film Iron Monkey directed by Yuen Woo Ping also makes some interesting
comments on masculinity in a fun, kick ass, kind of way.
Good Luck
