Most fiction scenes (Herzog aside, who I would consider a documentary
filmmaker even when at his most narrative) do not intend to capitalize on
the indexical nature of the film image. On the other hand, all documentary
scenes are making some kind of appeal in this direction. We can have
access to this distinction without the shaky notion of "trust."
