I agree with you -Steve- that benign anthropocentrism is our mos thopeful
route to environmental salvation but:
Was not the point Grey was making that as far as nature is concerned mass
extinctions are neither positive nor negative, they are just events.
Nature will happily carry on making new and interesting lifeforms out of
the debris.
If extinctions per se are unimportant to nature then their rate is less
important still (slow, geological scale or quick, a few human generations).
The evolved forms may be different but nature will go on.
However I would heartilly agree wiith Grey 's delightful last paragraph and
wish to keep our world "for a few more cosmic seconds"
