Announcement of Staff Vacancy
PROJECT PLANNER FOR E-JOURNALS ARCHIVING
**This is a temporary, one-year appointment, with the possibility of an
extension.**
The MIT Libraries has received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
for a one-year planning process to define a multi-year project for archiving
"dynamic e-journals", those newly emerging scholarly websites that provide a
broad range of dynamic content. The Libraries are seeking an individual
with significant knowledge of the scholarly publishing environment and the
technical and legal issues related to digital publishing to carry out this
project. A full description of the project is available at
http://libraries.mit.edu/admin/mellon.html. This position is funded for one
year, with the possibility of extension if funding is received for a
multi-year project.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The project planner will be responsible for three broad
activities: 1) surveying the existing e-journal environment and negotiating
partnerships with appropriate publishers of dynamic e-journals; 2) exploring
the strategies and technologies we might apply to archiving dynamic
e-journals, understanding the legal issues, and convening meetings of
experts to illuminate the challenges; 3) developing a specific plan for
building a sustainable dynamic e-journal archive at MIT and nurturing
investment in the plan by key stakeholders. The project planner will
develop and lead teams of staff from MIT and its partners in defining
technical specifications and assessing the viability of various tools and
infrastructures. In particular, the ability to utilize the infrastructure
developed for the Libraries' DSpace Project will be explored. The final
output of the planning project will consist of a grant proposal for the
multi-year project.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience sufficient to provide knowledge of
current and emerging models for digital scholarly publishing. Fundamental
understanding of technologies applicable to digital publishing and of the
legal issues related to it. Evidence of project planning experience, and
strong communications, negotiation, and leadership skills.
HIRING SALARY: $60,000.
Review of applications will begin immediately. Applications must include a
cover letter, resume, and names and addresses of three current references
and should be mailed to:

The MIT Libraries include five major subject libraries (architecture and
planning; engineering; humanities; science; management and social sciences)
and several branch libraries in specialized subject areas. The Libraries
contain more than 2.6 million printed volumes, over 20,000 serial
subscriptions, and extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides,
photographs, sound recordings, printed music, manuscripts, motion pictures,
and videotapes. The Libraries are currently migrating to the Ex Libris
Aleph system. The Libraries' webpage (http://libraries.mit.edu/) presents
information about library services, access to approximately 275 databases
and 2575 e-journals, and multiple links to other pertinent Internet
resources. MIT Libraries maintain membership in the Association of Research
Libraries, the Boston Library Consortium, and OCLC through NELINET.
DSpace is a joint development effort by the MIT Libraries and the
Hewlett-Packard Company that will enable MIT faculty and researchers to
submit, store, revise and distribute their publications and other rich-media
documents. It will allow Library users to access, read, and search those
documents via the World Wide Web, and will provide MIT with a way to
preserve its intellectual capital. For more information about this exciting
project, please see our web
page at "http://web.mit.edu/dspace".
MIT offers excellent benefits including tuition assistance and a relocation
allowance. The MIT Libraries affords a flexible and collegial working
environment and fosters professional growth of its staff with management
training, travel funding for professional meetings, and a professional
research grant program. MIT is a smoke-free campus.
MIT is strongly and actively committed to diversity within its community and
particularly encourages applications from qualified women and ethnic
minority candidates.
