Quick and dirty screen for low alpha-1,
Suspect galactosaemia,
Suspect CDGS1,
... some of the reasons why one might do protein electrophoresis, Aubrey.
Yes, there are much more specific tests for each which should be done
first, of course. But the bizarre electrophoretic pattern in galactosaemia
or CDGS is a useful lead, when present, while you wait for the Gal1PUT or
transferrin IEF or PMM result.
Regarding paraproteins in children, another cause is the odd oligoclonal
restriction that occurs post-BMT for immunodeficiency.
