Mike,
Are you concerned about both Medical and Clinical Scientist Grades without
MRCPath providing Chemical Pathology advice out of hours?

Subject: Out of hours cover for clinical advice
I would be grateful for information and opinions on clinical scientists
and chemical pathologists providing out of hours cover for clinical
advice. I am particularly concerned with the qualification of the
staff performing such duties. I suspect that almost all chemical
pathologists will be MRCPath or FRCPath but I believe that some
departments have junior grade B clinical scientists without these
qualifications performing this function. Does anyone know of
recommendations concerning out of hours clinical advice - College,
CPA, ACB etc? What would the legal position be of having
unsupervised junior staff providing out of hours advice?
I realise that departments with small number of clinical scientists
will have difficulties in providing this service without the use of junior
staff but is this acceptable in the current climate of clinical
governance etc.
I am not particularly concerned here with matters of payment,
important though that is but of the experience and training of those
providing this service
