As for the 'resistance to theory' right now I can only say that Americans could care less about theory right now. I do not prefer to speak for others, or an entire nation, so as an American all I can do is relay the American sentiments I have thus encountered and my personal feelings as well. I prefer to invoke theory to make meaning of the event (which of course will never truly happen) because meaning is only an illusion of our need to make something incomprehensible comprehensible. For me, theory is a device I can use to wrap my thoughts around all ends of the spectrum and avoid the path of narrow-mindedness, especially in times like these when it is critical to be as open and fair as possible.
In terms of the media coverage and the way in which they are using the 'tricks of the trade' to incite an entire spectrum of emotions, rage and retaliation high on the list, is actually brilliant. This is not to say I agree with such tactics in the least, however, they must be commended for being able to put their finger on the pulse of the nation and know EXACTLY what they need to do to put a nation behind an ideology that the public may not realize they are being subscribed to. Or maybe it is just that Americans are predictable and ferociously patriotic. I don't know. What I do know is that when I look my fellow citizens in the eyes, I can actually FEEL the rage manifesting itself from the depths of their souls. How I would not want to be the one on the other side of those eyes. All I can say is that if the media is successful in its campaign to perpetuate a 'war of retaliation' oh, jesus, look out. Because American patriotism, even devoid of action and just in t!
heory, is enough to make other cou
ntries quake in their boots. I live here and am a bit frightened by this! Since I said right now Americans are not concerned with theory, I will say this in simple terms: It is like I am watching a scrawny boy instigate a fight with a heavy weight champion, and I'm saying please, please don't provoke anything. Nothing good will come of it, because I know that when you unleash the fighter within such a person, all reason will go out the window and hell will break loose. So as the media provokes the American public, it is unleasing the beast within all Americans and our die hard nature towards freedom and justice. This beast does not get to come out often, but when it does, oh I don't even have words for it. -Carolyn
