Gombrich, "Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights: A Progress Report." J. Warburg
& Courtauld Inst. 32:162-70.
Much as I respect Gombrich, please check with me first if tempted to write
that his millennial ideas are useful in study of Bosch. I read a paper once
to the effect that modern academics, even medievalists, rarely spend much
time reading the Bible, and tend to give a higher priority to the writings of
Augustine and other commentators on the Bible. This can be a big problem when
dealing with the work of those artists and writers who seem to have been
unusually close readers of the Bible. My two examples of close readers of the
Bible--and not everyone would agree with me--are Bosch and Dante.
