A one day Library Association workshop packed with advice and tips for
encouraging boys to read:
Boys and reading: meeting the challenge
1 February, London
'I find reading boring and I don't have the time. Most stories are on the TV
so I don't really bother now. I would sooner play on my computer.'
A twelve year-old boy confirming many people's worst fears about boys'
reading. Yet most librarians also know boys who read voraciously, in some
cases despite peer pressure that leads them to hide books up their sleeves
so they won't be identified as readers.
The last few years have seen unprecedented concern about boys' reading.
Influential reports have been published and changes have been made to the
curriculum. What are the implications for libraries? How should library
staff respond to the challenges? Do they have a role in breaking down
stereotypes? How can they promote reading to boys effectively?
