A lot depends on the condition of the map - if it is fragile or damaged
there is no alternative to flattening under weights for a lengthy period.
The process can be speeded by first lightly misting over the back of the map
with a fine water sprayer, or better by first leaving the open map overnight
in a cellar or unheated outhouse where the atmosphere will have a higher
moisture content.
If the paper is in good condition I have no hesitation in rolling the map up
backwards over a cardboard tube, of which I keep a number of different
diameters, and leaving it secured thus for a few hours with rubber bands.
The knack is to overdo the backrolling just enough to compensate for the
tendency of the paper to go back to its original state, so that it ends up
flat. A carrier sheet slightly larger than the map helps to avoid any
tendency to tear, and here again an increased moisure content is helpful for
stubborn customers. I have flattened hundreds of 19th century Ordnance
Survey plans in this way with no obvious adverse effects.
