I think George is better suited to speak to this question. But I think
that the answer is that yes, it was political since his father Charles II
of Anjou was the one who pushed for it, but SLT rather magnificently
fulfilled the Franciscan ideal of renunciation of both wealth and family
that (if you believe Trexler) the Franciscans were pushing so vigorously
in the last 1/3 of the 13th and the 14th century, and renouncing the
throne to become a mendicant could, I imagine, be understood as an act
worthy of sainthood. He did all the usual stuff -- kiss lepers, help the
poor,etc, necessary for the "life long" requirement for canonization too.
