A partial solution that will not satisfy Peter Zweigel, but may do so for
some in academia (classroom delight) is available from the National
Geophysical Data Center, 325 Broadway, E/GC3, Code 971, Boulder, Colorado
80303-3328 USA (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov). This agency sells the "Surface
of the Earth Icosahedron Globe", a 20 sided cut-out-and-fold-up model of
the earth in full color. Sold per 30/60/90 for less than a dollar each.
cheers,
